Well after months of waiting and anticipation Battlestar Galactica is finally back and back with one heck of a bang. The second half of the final season kicked off with “Sometimes a Great Notion”, an episode that featured two huge reveals, one of which of course was the final cylon.
So what are your thoughts on what occurred in the episode? Personally I thought Ellen Tigh as the final cylon was a good move, it meant all the main players are still as they were and perhaps have a destiny or past even more important than just another number. Ellen’s relationship with Tigh also has an additional edge of dark romanticism which – despite the destructive nature – shows they’ve been together in some form throughout the ages.
Dualla’s suicide was a shock I never saw coming and one that saddened me despite not overly being a huge fan of the character, which I feel was short changed by the writers of the Billy / Lee love triangle. When Dee was playing with those jacks on Earth, I instantly thought she was having a cylon flashback, just as Tory, Sam, Tyrol and Tigh had. I figured she’d offed herself because she couldn’t take the fact she was a cylon after all… shame that wasn’t the case, since RDM stated post the airing of the episode, she is indeed dead and does not return. Oh well.. bye Dee.
The episode had some wonderful cinematography also, some reminiscent of a sort of Bergman feel, the color drain worked well to portray the desolation of the environment, but also of the characters. And the reflection of Dee’s profile in her lifes blood… well.
A cracking start to the final episodes.
