After having been fairly big into it when I was a kid, I fell out of gaming for several years (totally missed the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube gen) and got back in about a year and a half ago. I actually got a 360 first, before I got my PS3, but wound up selling it after a few months (I didn't hate it, I was just in a financial bind and really needed the money). Got my PS3 late last year, and have been very happy with it.
Lately I've been reading about all these awesome PS2 games, like Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Kingdom Hearts, Ico, and probably there's a ton more that I don't even know about. And, of course, the PS3 doesn't play them. So I've been considering getting a PS2, and am curious as to the input of other gamers. It would probably be pretty cheap now, even though the PS2 isn't quite dead as far as game production.
I've thought of a few reasons against it as well. Spending even a relatively small amount of money means that's money I'm not spending on the PS3. There's awesome PS2 games out there, to be sure, but the PS3 is by definition better (obviously). So is it worth it to go back instead of looking forward, when there's HD awesomeness to be had?
Also, I've heard that the PS2 isn't very sturdy. I've heard horror stories about it lasting only a few months for people and then they had to get a new one. And then another one. And so on. I don't plan to sink my heart and soul into it, but I'd like to buy something that works. I even had a friend (360 owner) react with surprise when I told him that my PS3 "hadn't broken yet" because he had had a PS2 and his frustration over how it constantly would stop working had made him want to switch when the seventh generation came around.
So whaddya think?
