Our pal TheFremen has written a really interesting article over at his blog and we thought we’d highlight it here. The article titled: “In the grim future of Starcraft 2, there is only war (and EXTREMELY rigid gender roles)” looks at Starcraft 2 and the gender roles within the games framework. The article examines those female characters that are present and how they’re represented in what sounds like fairly shallow / male gaze fashion. He even covered the invisible LGBT characterizations in the game. Really interesting stuff and given we enjoyed the read, we figured you might too, so head on over and check it out.

This isn’t specific to starcraft 2, but I notice that almost 100% of female action hero type characters have high heels. Its as if these females have to overcompensate for their ability to kick ass by dressing super femme. For example, in starcraft the Infested Kerrigan has armor made of bones, and she has high heels. This is rediculous… since she is an ex-military officer who is used to wearing boots all the time. Also, high heels are NOT the prime footwear for combat, a lesson that Bayonetta and Resident Evil (and more) really need to figure out.
Great game, but in a galaxy rife with archetypal characters, it sadly doesn’t surprise.
