Sexy Robot Trip for Enslaved by Ninja Theory and Namco Bandai

Oh dear lord, why oh why! Whilst checking out a game I was truly looking forward to, I came across this sexist drivel. Yes when you pre-order upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 game “Enslaved: Odyssey To The West” you too can get “Sexy Robot Trip”. This is essentially the female character of Trip, dressed in slinky ‘robot’ wear. This is even more saddening given Enslaved is by Ninja Theory, the company that brought us the wonderful PS3 title Heavenly Sword, with its awesome female characters Nariko and Kai. I’m still looking forward to Enslaved, but this sort of tacky sexist marketing does truly pain the heart of this female gamer. When will we outgrow this mentality.

So there wasn’t ALREADY something to complain about with it basically being a shallow and less feminist retread of “Prince of Persia 2008,” or the clear reliance on tired gender tropes, or Ninja Theory’s own “LOL who wants to play as the girl” comments AFTER they learned the hard way with “Heavenly Sword” that games featuring genuinely interesting and strong and multi-dimensional women DO NOT SELL? That… without this little reskin pre-order thingy it would have been ENTIRELY ACCEPTABLE?

Nevermind that despite the name, it’s not even ‘sexy,’ it’s just… bizarre (unless you happened to be the type of person who found Kristianna Loken in Terminator 3 more attractive WITHOUT her human skin, in which case I’m surpised that you have THAT much pull in the industry to have something like that catered to you XD). Like… is it supposed to be ‘sexy’ just because she’s a girl? IT DON’T MAKE NO SENSE

It’s cause she’s a girl showing off her metal crotch!

I don’t get it either, but all games are really eye candy heavy. Our society kind of caters to showing off women.

I don’t why they don’t just offer a full on nudity patch… its not like there won’t be fan made ones anyways. Why pretend like you have some standards you are trying to uphold?

Don’t even get me started on this game. It’s based on the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West”, and while it’s clearly only loosely borrowing from the source material, they changed the character Tripitaka, a male Buddhist priest, to the female Trip, just so there could be hetero romantic tension with the Monkey character.

‘Cause, y’know, a dude dragging another dude across the world on a journey, that’d just be gay. Needs more half-naked ladies. Whatever, America.

Yeah I agree with Bebop. While I (thankfully) missed the aformentioned “LOL who wants to play as a girl?” reactions from Ninja Theory AND I’ll overlook the fact that Heavenly Sword was SUPPOSED to be a trilogy and then got canned… here’s what I learned according to Sony’s latest Quore episode: the game is called ENSLAVED because Trip essentially manipulates (‘enslaves’) Monkey into serving her. The words the writer used to describe Trip varied between physically weak, scared and cunning; Monkey was described as strong and brutish. Really? REALLY!? Wasn’t this crap supposed to end with Hitchcock films?

I’m assuming everyone here is aware that they couldn’t have been more exploitive of money if they tried. His physique is male perfection personified, incredibly visualized to convey a mix of extreme upper body strength with sleek agility. His perfectly sculpted form is meant to embody “tough, rugged, sexy”. All the reps in the world couldn’t get you to Monkey’s level, yet he’s what all guys wish their body was.

This is all besides the point regardless. The game is extremely well realized. The story is solid and entertaining. The relationship between Monkey and Trip could have been hallow and one note but instead is deep, emotional, and most important, believable.

People like love stories, that isn’t going to change. The relationship Trip and Monkey is interesting and engaging, heightened further by the introduction of the 3rd character, Pig. Trip’s physical and emotional weakness at the beginning of the story allow her vast growth as a character as she learns strength and independence through her interactions with Monkey, who in turn learns the values of friendship and to trust in people. His hard exterior is broken down by his growing to care for Trip as he comes to understand sacrifice for the sake of others.

Don’t fall for these knee-jerk assumptions. Sit down with the game and enjoy as a very well written relationship evolves between these two characters.

Honestly, while the outfit is ridiculous, the character of Trip is perfectly sound. She’s a survivor, a techie; not a warrior. Monkey’s history is one of violence and self-reliance. Trip’s struggle is to return to her people and keep them safe with her smarts, not her muscle. She exploits Monkey to help her on her journey, which she otherwise wouldn’t survive since again, she’s not a fighter.
This isn’t a matter of old stereotypes–Trip definitely makes the most of her talents–her brains and her survival instincts.
