Cliffy B thinks “Reeding is for Faggots”? Dom and Marcus bookworms?

Not sure what to make of this, but it came via Twitter and email with a suggestion we cover it here, so here we are. Cliffy B, or Cliff Bleszinski is of course the guy behind Gears of War, one of the more overly macho game franchises on store shelves today. Color us surprised today when we were sent to a site with the tattoo you see below and we assume Cliffy B leaving his comment that it’s the best tattoo ever.

Now we didn’t want to take a knee-jerk reaction to this, given it could be seen that indeed there could be what is an odd sardonic subtext to the overall message, but given some quick research into commentary about this image revealed blatant homophobia, that is probably unlikely. One commenter elsewhere online stated the tattoo “nicely encapsulates the brilliance that embodies the Religious Right” which is interesting.

Anyway, we’re not judging, we are merely throwing it out there as it seemed a very odd public display of something that, even if it isn’t meant to be homophobic, is only fanning the flames of homophobia. Let’s face it those that use the word faggot freely in a derogatory sense aren’t getting the subtextual message if it is embedded in there. Given those Bleszinski probably sees as his key audience though, can we be overly surprised?

That’s a tattoo that will be regretted some day. It’s not only kind of ugly, but anyone who sees it will be soured just a tad.

Are you serious? He was clearly being ironic. That tattoo is reknown on the internet for it’s stupidity and for the idiocy of the person who stuck it on his arm.

To analyze someones comment on it is absolutely ludicrous! Get a life.

that tattoo will never be regretted. the owner will cherish the little joy it bringg to him everyday. knowing that somewhere in the world there is a person like LILLET WHO JUST DOESN’T GET IT. and thats why we exist.

I can only assume that is what he’s talking about?

Seriously, though, I would give the bearer of this tattoo the benefit of the doubt and suggest that it is meant to be ironic. After all, “reeding” has nothing to do with books; the entire thing sits under a stylized “AmericA” sign, which seems to suggest he is saying Americans are illiterate – which is obviously a comment on the condition of our schools; the eagle in the image is deformed, commenting on pollution and what we’re doing to the environment; and the use of the offensive word at the end is probably meant as commentary on the type of homophobia you’d expect to see from someone with an eagle on his arm.

I think everyone taking this seriously should maybe step back and reconsider their knee jerk reactions.
