Our good friend Michael over at The Brainy Gamer has a great post up about the recent furor over the “Fight Against Grenade Spam” (yes it’s FAGS) usage in the latest Modern Warfare 2 promo by Infinity Ward. Because Michael has covered the issue in such a perfect manner, we’re not going to say much except send you over there to read it. If you want to leave thoughts there, or indeed pop back here, that’s cool.
Thanks for linking to my piece, LG pals. You’re the best.
If this story has any sort of positive angle, it’s that a lot of us expressed outrage in a variety of ways (blogs, social networks, email, etc.), and it resulted in Infinity Ward removing the video.
I’m hoping, but not holding my breath, that this incident will encourage more self-reflection the next time a dev thinks of posting such a thing. My cynical side says these are calculated promotional tactics meant to provoke ire for publicity, but I’d love to be wrong about that. The increasing frequency of this sort of thing lately makes me think cynicism is probably the right attitude to maintain. Too bad.
