A little female character info for upcoming game Borderlands from Gearbox Software and 2K Games. Lilith is the token female character in this post apocalyptic FPS RPG title. She’s a once human now siren character. She has the ability to create temporal bubbles. Lilith is essentially the mage support character in Borderlands, which has a release date of October US and October 23 EUR. Lilith looks pretty cool and we assume she’s playable given the game offers up some 4 player co-op. You have to love that she doesn’t have breastage of gargantuan proportion for a change.
I’m really tired of this trend that Left 4 Dead started and is being propogated. 3 guys and 1 girl is not equal representation. Why not 2 girls and 2 guys. Why not a guy a girl and 2 trans people or humanoids with no discernable gender.
While i don’t expect video games to spontaneously change their male bias, It sucks that the small steps towards equal representation are so many years apart because games copy trends instead of pushing boundries.
That being said I hate playing premade characters, but at least a female character can keep my interest. So bravo for giving a female option, unlike Gears of War.
While she doesn’t have gigantic breasts… she is incredibley frail… especially compared to those hunky guys. While I prefer to play as a slender girl I don’t like how most video game girls these days are physically weaker than males and rely on agility or special powers to be competitive. Sometimes I want a big bull dike carrying a chaingun hahaha.
It is a problem, to be sure.. When I was younger, I didn’t really think about playing as a fat little plumber and his brother, but now I totally agree. While being the typical back-row scorceress can be fun at times, more often than not I feel more comfortable wioth axes, swords, armor, and being in the enemy’s face. :p By the way, ShadowTiger, you might like Sacred 2, if you haven’t tried it already. The all-female Seraphim are quite awesome tanks, and most of the males are quite fragile. :p
I’m guessing that equal representation in gaming will be less of an issue when the male/female gamer ratio is also equal.
I’m likely to catch flak for posting that in here, but hey.
@ShadowTiger
I just want to point out, that compared with the guys in Borderlands Lilith isn’t frail – well she is compared to Brick (but everyone is frail next to him). I think she is a perfectly fine example of a strong female character in video gaming. As compared against the other two male figures (Roland & Mordecai), she hits harder, runs faster, jumps a bit higher, and has more HP than Mordecai can even dream of.
Long live Lilith, ruler of the Borderlands!
Anyway…does character gender really matter? Honestly? If a game is good there shouldn’t be an issue of “I’m playing as a male/female this game sucks/there should be equal representation”
If Tomb Raider had a male character would it be any different? No – it would still be a horrible game franchise.
If Assassin’s Creed was made with a female assassin instead would it change? Not really, it would still be a fun & awesome gaming experience.
Yes, the gaming market is filled with male characters that’s because most gamers & game developers are male.
There are strong, interesting, and not pigeon holed characters out there: Zelda/Sheik, Samus, Jade, Lilith, Hildegard von Krone, Jill Valentine, Manon Batiste (the original Medal of Honor badass), Sarah Kerrigan the Queen of Blades, SHODAN, & Yuri Sakazaki just to name a few
I can’t even name that many notable male characters off the top of my head & they flood the market. Most of them are generic.
That’s it…I’m done.
Man your dumb shadowtiger! All women are weak compared to men gG.
