Welcome to the first review from the lovely Kristin, she’ll be writing a teen column here at the site – as yet untitled – and has decided to bring you all a review of Plants vs. Zombies. I know right, that’s the name of a game you just want to know more about, so without further ado…
Plants vs. Zombies is a new PC and Mac title from the casual game developer PopCap Games. The company has an interesting knack of hitting on whatever it is that makes a game addictive, fun and simple with perfect learning curve. This is something they’ve once more achieved with the deliciously titled tower defense / strategy genre title Plants vs. Zombies.
If you are looking for another addicting PopCap game and are a fan of plants, or zombies, then it’s suggested you play Plants vs. Zombies. This game is one of the most addicting things I’ve played since Hexic. This game has everything! There’s a threat of a zombie apocalypse, a strong a unisexual lead, and a crazy next door neighbor. It’s available on Steam, and is gaining review scores around the same as Left 4 Dead, another zombie ridden title.
The game falls neatly into the tower defense genre, it’s your job to stop the zombies reaching your house by strategically placing killer plants on your front lawn. You start the game with a simple tutorial, explaining that the way you grow plants is through collecting enough sun to plant a specific flower or shooter. You can gain extra sun by planting Sunflowers, and the more you plant the faster you collect.
The main plants are shooters; ranging from a single shot Peashooter, to a catapult that hurls watermelons. As all zombies are not the same, with some wearing armor – such as a traffic cone of football uniform – and some even using screen doors as a shield, you need to work out what the best plants are on any given level. With each new zombie you encounter, you earn a special plant to better your arsenal.
There are about six different maps you play on, and by beating the game you unlock a Zen Garden. This garden allows you to grow plants that will earn you money, with that money you can buy upgrades, other gardens, and items that help your plants flourish. The game also includes mini-games and puzzles, along with a collection of survivor maps to test how long you can hold off the zombie waves.
Graphically Plants vs. Zombies is a gem of cartoon beauty. The zombies are adorable as they groan “Mmm Brains” and stumble forward across your lawn in all their 2 dimensional glory. The plants too are something akin to a cute Pokemon deck, with their eyes blinking and looking adorable. The sound too is top notch, PopCap really know their audience.
All in all, it may be a short game but it does have great replay value. Oh and if that’s not enough to get it, another good thing is that it’s cheap.
Prepare to soil your plants.
