Mass Effect movie’s female commander

With word getting out that "Mass Effect" has been optioned for a movie, we went a snooping to see what other gaming and movie sites were saying about it and noticed the forgone conclusion that Commander Shepherd will be a guy in a film (if one ever gets made being as ‘optioned’ doesn’t mean diddly in the grand Hollywood scheme of things). We thought no "goddammit", "get away from her you bitch" and of course we also wondered "Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?"

We think a female Commander Shepherd would be much better than a guy and not just for some lezzie gamer eye candy, but for far deeper reasons. A lone female hero can work better than a male one – when done right – because it would set it apart from ‘just another’ yawny meat-head sci-fi action flick. We’ve got a couple of our suggestions for Commander Shepherd in a Mass Effect movie after the jump, feel free to add your own to the comments.

It seems pretty obvious that we’d choose Clea DuVall, because she actually looks a lot like the most popular female iteration of Commander Shepherd we’ve seen. Sure you can make your female Shepherd look like loads of people, but for whatever reason a lot of people (male and female) all chose a similar looking bob cut Shepherd as their in-game avatar. Clea DuVall is also capable of being a little edgy, whilst also being able to appear stern but flawed. We think she’d make an awesome female Commander Shepherd in a Mess Effect movie. Mass Effect Commander Shepherd Michelle Forbes Ahh Michelle Forbes, you wooed us as Ensign Ro Laren in Star Trek the Next Gen and again as the ruthless Admiral Helena Cain in Battlestar Galactica. What a wonderful female Commander Jane Shepherd she would make if a Mass Effect movie were to make it into production. Michelle Forbes is  ballsy and has that commandeering voice, so she could definitely issue some commands. She’s also got that cool short haired Shepherd look when she chooses to lop off her locks.

I agree completely, especially considering the next big Sci-Fi movie will be Star Trek. That film will ooze testosterone.

The female Shepard was a better fit in the game anyway. (Not to mention the voice acting.) I’d also be curious to see if they’ll stick to Shepard being a Soldier with the same default back story.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought default femShep looked insanely like awesome Clea Duvall…

Personally I’d like some color to the femShep… Maybe Michelle Rodriguez, not only a female but a colored female and she’s got the action roots and the ability. The war within could steam from her portrayal of Diana Guzman in Girlfight… Or hell why not Sara Tomko? A native American actress who’s already got sci fi action flicks under her belt?

Regardless I’m sick of hollywood’s casting of typical white males as heroes… Lets go somewhere different.

I think that the reason that most of the video game websites think that Shepard is going to be a guy in the film, is probably because when Shepard is shown in trailers for the games or as merchandise, Shepard’s usually a he.
