The Escapist questions online personality

Just a quick heads up for those interested in the ongoing ‘why can’t we gamers all just get the hell along’ theme we’re interested in here at Lesbian Gamers; Robert Zacny over at The Escapist has written a very nice piece – and not just because we’re mentioned – on this very subject.

Zacny delves into the issues involved in online discontent in the games community and looks at how anonymity affects peoples behaviors. It’s a nice piece and he even name checks Sherry Turkle, someone who is always interesting from an academic perspective, so he clearly did his homework.

That was a very interesting article. I liked your quote about the ‘freest speech is often the most hateful’. I see it all the time and it makes me want to cry. I’ve always been of the mind though that it is still the minority who speak hatefully (not just on homosexuality) but even more unfortunately it is the majority that let hateful speech go without confrontation (this applies to both online and real life).
