Fat Princess for PS3 is a new downloadable game for PS3 (out TBA). It’s caused quite a stir in the realm of gaming, particularly in the feminist sector. Fat Princess you see centers on a "comic medieval battle royale". It’s your job as player to rescue your beloved [fat] princess from the enemy dungeon. There’s a catch though: your adversary has been stuffing her with food to fatten her up and it’s going to take most of your army working together to carry her back across the battlefield.
Alright, so you see the issues straight away I assume, the main one being she’s fat. One blogger is irate, but I couldn’t help but think her argument for Sony "creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes" was somewhat marred by the hate that spilled over in the comments – in support of her post and against anyone with a differing opinion – and the image of her ‘Sony salute’.
Unless we approach these issues with decorum, really what is the point? Yes it’s annoying she’s fat, but would it be any less annoying if the princess were svelte, perfect and large breasted? This is the usual issue the female gamer faces. Is Fat Princess objectifying women any more than say Tomb Raider or Soul Calibur? Is it fat bashing to utilize a game mechanic wherein one of the characters is fattened up, but the main objective is to rescue her because she’s loved so much?
Feminist Gamer too covered the story of the Fat Princess and they were a bit pissed as well. They actually come up with a more well rounded and calm argument – in the actual post – about the game mechanic itself and how it could have been better implemented by negating the use of a person and exchanging it for an inanimate object, like a treasure chest. They also suggest arming the princess, which would be the road we’d concur with (be she fat, or not). Again though any polite response that differs from the original argument is ridiculed by the administration or called trolling, which is a shame because the core argument at the posts beginning seems to carry weight… sorry.
So what do you guys think.. is Fat Princess by Sony a non politically correct piece of garbage that will essentially just perpetuate myths about obesity and fuel the fire of ‘fat haters’? Or is Fat Princess just a game, an innocent game that actually – dread to say it – looks pretty cute … Fat Princesses and all that ‘baggage’ carries with it aside?
