FarCry 2 female character fiasco!

Oh Ubisoft, why art thou so cruel, you giveth with the one hand and you taketh with the other. As we all revel in the joy that is Ubiday’s announcing Beyond Good & Evil 2, news about FarCry 2 isn’t so good for female gamers.

According to news coming out of the event there are 9 playable characters in FarCry 2 and all of them are male. That’s 9 ‘choices’ ALL male. The reason given by Ubisoft bigwigs… it would have cost too much to add a female playable character (how do you tut in text!). Oh and before any fanboy says "well BG&E 2 has a female playable character and no male playable character", BG&E has ONE protagonist, not a choice of NINE all of which are female, because that would be ridiculous as well.

Since it’s so expensive for Ubisoft to add one female character to their roster of 9 males, they’re clearly penny pinching. I hope my $100 protest pinches them like a tiny flea-bite as I WON’T be purchasing FarCry 2 out of protest.

I really really REALLY don’t get this. It makes as much sense as Bene Gesserit replacing mentats with thinking machines.

    Just go *tut*
    Works for me.
..and as for the actual article thingy. Well it’s not like I would have bought this game anyway.
They can make 9 different avi’s, but none of them female, because OBVIOUSLY they’d have to include pink fluffy toys, and ikky things about periods too, oh noes!!
    Stupid fecking ‘ell.
Eedjits, I tells ya, eedjits they are.
    Meh.

Smoogles, you crack me up! Like the eedjits think that girls who would play their game would be all fluffy bunny Barbies. I think it boils down to some game designers are still somehow threatened by strong women.

  5. Smoogles. says:

Yeah, they make it seem like they’d have to include pretty much an entire DVD of ‘female’ content, and oh gosh..
    ugh.

There’s no excuse for not offering the choice of male or female characters these days, though I have to admit, it doesn’t bother me that much for shooters and action games. They usually consist of a paper-thin story (or none at all), and the avatar really does feel like a puppet you’re moving around the screen. Male, female, whatever, doesn’t make much difference. It bothers me more when role-playing games don’t offer the choice. It’s difficult to immerse yourself in a world and role-play a character when you can’t choose something as fundamental as the character’s gender. I couldn’t get into The Witcher for that reason.
I won’t be buying Far Cry 2, but that’s because I tried Far Cry and wasn’t impressed, not because of this issue.

Do you remember Medal of Honor Underground? Play as French woman Manon. I didn´t feel much difference playing that or other FPS male characters.
Because it´s FPS, i can much easier imagine that it´s me in the game, so the character gotta be a woman ;)
    I still don´t buy it.
If they are smart enough and want more money, they´ll make more games with good, strong female characters and not just weak ones.
We just have to be show there´s a hell of a lott girls who wants to play action games etc.

Does it firkin matter if it has a female character or not???
I mean most of the people who wrote hear have some real feministic issues to pay attention to things like ‘’no female character in game’’ by the way most feminists have a self esteem problem and are more threatened by men in general than men by a strong woman.
A true strong person does not pay attention to miner things and goes on with what must be done.
